OVERVIEW OF THE ABU SYSTEM
An Adaptive Behavior Learning Environment is just what the name implies. It is a classroom designed to assist students in adapting behaviors.
It is NOT a classroom designed to keep bad students indefinitely, not a jail, or lock-down facility.
The ABU classroom is a tightly structured classroom setting with primary emphasis on behavior modification. As a student responds to the structure of the classroom and its rules, regulations, rewards, and consequences, that student is allowed more and more freedom. Ultimately the goal of ABU is to reintegrate the students into mainstream or resource classes.
Reentering regular education or resource is done gradually based on a level system. A student may reenter the mainstream in as few as 10 days, depending on his response to the level system. He may be totally mainstreamed in as few as 37 days. This mainstreaming is not done without controls and the possibility of consequences, even the possibility of returning to the ABU classroom for one, several, or all of his classes.
ABU teachers and assistants are trained to interact with their students in a non-threatening and non-confrontational manner. There will be no loud reprimands or threats. The verbal interaction is specific and consistent. So are the consequences. The students know this. Even though they may challenge it, they know that there will be consequences for their inappropriate behavior. But the consequences will be meted out in the ABU classroom or in the office, not in the hallway or lunchroom.
Each student will have his or her own individual tracking chart. The tracking chart we will be using at MJH 6TH is a tool to measure behavior.
Behavior is monitored constantly throughout the day. If appropriate behavior is observed, a () is given. A zero (0) is given for inappropriate behavior. Each student is given 2 warnings prior to the zero. (When in the mainstream classroom, only 1 warning is given) This procedure is broken down into 30-minute increment for appropriate:

At the end of the day, the number of checks and zeros are calculated to come up with a behavior “grade”. Each check is worth 1 point for a total of 60 points. 3 points are given for homework; another 3 points for bringing the homework paper back signed, for a complete total of 66 points for the day.
The behavior grade or average is used to determine the level the student is on. Each student begins on a specific level determined by the ABU teacher or from the ARD committee. There are six levels through which the students move in the program:
Red level: On the red level, the student is to carryout the goals and objectives at a 75% behavior average for 3 days
Blue Level: On the blue level, the student is expected to function at 80% mastery of the goals and objectives for 10 days
Green Level: On the green level, the student is expected to carry out goals and objectives at 85% mastery for 12 days
Yellow Level: On the yellow level, the student is expected to carry out the goals and objectives at 90% mastery for 15 days
Transition Level: On the transition level the student is expected to function at 95% mastery of the goals and objectives for 20 days
Achievement Level: On the achievement level the goals are the same as on the transitional level with the exception of the following:
1) The student is expected to follow all classroom rules.
2) All discipline problems will be referred to the office.
3) After 3 referrals student will be placed back on day 1 of transitional level.
